Cake
  • 1 box cake mix plus ingredients called for on the box
  • 1 container chocolate frosting
Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
  • 1 pound fresh strawberries
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening

Method
 

  1. Prepare cake according to box directions. Let cool completely.
  2. Frost the cake with chocolate frosting.
  3. Wash and thoroughly dry the strawberries.
  4. Melt chocolate chips and shortening in a double boiler or microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth.
  5. Dip each strawberry into the melted chocolate, coating about 2/3 of the strawberry.
  6. Place chocolate-dipped strawberries on parchment paper and let the chocolate set (you can refrigerate to speed this up).
  7. Arrange chocolate-dipped strawberries on top of the frosted cake.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate chips. You can also add a sprinkle of sea salt on the chocolate-dipped strawberries for a sweet and salty treat.
